Peter
This is not right
As I listen to
A class full of laughter
An old video plays
Of us sitting outside at a picnic table
Talking about life
And the blues
And you dance then
To make me laugh
Or do ‘Shakespeare’
Or your favorite current line
Of whatever play you were doing

Peter
I am tied to this desk
Unable to leave work
I ask myself
Can I sit here for the rest of the day
And maintain my sanity
When I know your lease on life
Is about to expire
Then I wonder if I were there
Would there be anything
I could say to comfort you
You know I can’t dance – I smile
And I never could string together
The kind of words that
Dazzled the world
Like you did

Peter
I hear from the adjoining classroom
‘Happy Birthday to you…
Happy Birthday to you…’
I stop to listen in disbelief
I become angry
And I ask God
Where are You today
But I ask Him
Where ever He is
To cradle you like a baby
To comfort you with soothing words
And rock you as you slumber
And take good care of you, my friend.

I remember then how infrequently
I tell God ‘thank you’ so I do
And I think how sometimes we miss
Telling the people who made a difference
What a difference they made
In our lives

Peter, thank you
For being you
For playing only you
For your heart
For your kind words to me
For the way you danced
For way you let me be your friend
For your smile
For the way you laughed
And the sound of your laughter
Thank you
Thank you, actor, teacher and friend

Peter - you gave life to life.
